10 Cancer Causing Foods and How to Avoid Them

 Cancer is something that has touched us all in some capacity. Friend, family, work colleagues, there is someone in ALL our lives who has been touched by this cruel epidemic.

And yes, it is an epidemic.

I personally have been touched by cancer maybe more than most growing up in Dalkey. My mum Gael had breast cancer over 15 years ago. She luckily made a full recovery. My uncle had testicular cancer, my granny died of bowel cancer. My wife’s granddad and uncle died of cancer and her mother had breast cancer also but luckily made a full recovery. That’s not to mention my extended family.

This is something that is going to get worse and worse before it gets better in my opinion.

Every day we are getting close to cures.

However, are we getting closer to preventing it?

I’m not so sure…

The Irish Cancer Society has reported that at this time the chances of being diagnosed with cancer have narrowed to every 1 out of 2 men, and 1 out of 3 women.  Such numbers are not only staggering but indicate as well an epidemic of such proportions in Ireland and the rest of the world that is causing people to finally take on board that making strategic lifestyle changes are needed.  Start your lifestyle change here !

When it’s considered that most of these deaths are related to preventable causes it becomes even more obvious that people need to start looking closely at what we are putting into our bodies.

Among the greatest exposures to cancer comes from what people eat or put on their skin.  Cancer-causing foods are more than likely to be a part of your everyday diet without anyone ever being the wiser.  Below is a list of 10 cancer-causing foods that you should either limit in your consumption or avoid entirely.

Cancer-Causing Foods

  1. Hydrogenated Oils

Like vegetable oil, hydrogenated oils contain trans fat and are considered to be some of the worst products around.  This type of fat has been linked to the development of cancer, heart disease, and even immune system problems. It has been determined that there is really no safe amount of trans fat that are safe to add to your diet.  Despite the marketing and sales of thousands of common products that carry trans fats, the FDA has determined that trans fats are not at all healthy for a normal diet.

You can avoid trans fats by instead choosing coconut, rape seed, or olive oil.  Organic butter is also a much healthier option.

 

  1. Chips/Cheap Crisps

This is one of the many foods that people would be hard pressed to give up, as they are a well-known staple of the fast food industry and an easy, quick food to consume when one needs a quick pick me up.

Unfortunately, they are almost all fried in hydrogenated oil and salted excessively with cheap salts, making them a double threat to the health of the average consumer. Not only does the trans fat in these foods elevate the risk of cancer, but it has the very real probability of raising one’s blood pressure as well thanks to the added salt. In addition to this, foods heated above a designated temperature contain high levels of acryl amide, which is a chemical found in cigarette smoke and industrial building materials.

Even with organically produced fries and chips there is a risk thanks to the findings of the Environment Working Group that have shown that potatoes possess the most pesticide residue among several notable crops.

 

  1. Microwave Popcorn

It takes just a casual glance into a sealed bag of microwave popcorn to see that there are more than just kernels.  Most bagged popcorn contains perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA, which is technically classified as a carcinogen.  The artificial butter within the bag also contains other dangerous chemicals that can have an adverse effect upon the lungs when it is inhaled.

The best way to avoid any complications from eating too much microwave popcorn is to air pop your own popcorn and add your own ingredients later. This will help to avoid any chemicals that you may or may not know about and therefore reduce the risk.

 

  1. Processed Meats

All the favorites of your childhood including bacon, lunch meat, hot dogs, cheap sausages, and various other processed meats have been linked to the risk of pancreatic cancer.  It has been determined that hot dogs normally contain sodium nitrite, an ingredient that the USDA has been attempting to ban since back in the 1970s. Along with the mass consumption of hot dogs there has been a steep rise in leukemia risks throughout the US.

To reduce the risk, avoid heavily processed meats and look for products that are free of nitrites.

 

  1. Diet Drinks

 We’ve all heard of the so called dreaded sweetener Aspartame. What if I told you, it wasn’t the big, bad monster cancer causing sweetener everyone thought?

Aspartame is made by joining together the amino acids aspartic acid and phenylalanine. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and are found naturally in many foods. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying to be drinking diet coke every day as there’s a massive chemical SHIT STORM going on in the drinks, that will promote fat storage (yes even if there are 0 calories) and mimic the blood sugar spike we are looking to avoid.

However, any studies that have been done have been mostly on rats that have been given 5/5000 mg dosages. Correct me if I’m wrong, but giving anything that dosage of aspartame or anything for that matter is going to make it sick. Nothing has conclusively come back to indicate any tumor causing effects of consuming Aspartame. I’d be more worried of the colorings and preservatives diet drinks contain so steer clear in any case!

 

  1. Farmed Salmon

As mentioned above you might consider eating more fish if you are attempting to avoid red meat. Unfortunately, this can have a drawback as well if you are consuming the farmed version of this particular fish. Not only is it not quite as tasty, but it can contain cancer-causing pesticides, antibiotics, PCB’s, and even flame retardants as has been found in various cases.

If you’re going to eat salmon consider buying your fish from a retailer that is known to provide fresh, wild salmon.  If you’re feeling adventurous, go ahead and take up fishing and catch your own.

 

  1. Refined Sugar

Refined sugar has been given the danger label not only because it is a GMO food but because it is known to cause insulin levels to spike. This can in turn feed cancer cells and make a small problem that much worse.  Fructose found in sodas is a very serious culprit when it comes to cancer, as it contains a caramel coloring, which is a known carcinogen. Soda also acidifies the body, which can cause cancer cells to multiply.

Save yourself the trouble and skip the soda, and limit your intake of refined sugars.

 

  1. “Diet” Foods

Don’t be fooled by the buzz words such as “low-fat”, or “sugar-free”. While those items might be missing you can bet that they have been replaced by other chemicals that you know nothing about. Diet foods are often loaded with artificial ingredients and little else.  These ingredients have been linked to causing cancer in lab rats during testing and are also known carcinogens.

 

  1. Refined foods

There is a reason people screw their faces up when they hear the words “bleached food”. Traces of the chemicals used in the bleaching process remain in the food, and highly processed flours have a high carbohydrate count which can upset the blood sugar balance in your body. This then leads to a higher production of insulin which can feed cancer cells.

Try to avoid carbohydrates that are highly processed such as white bread, white pasta, white rice, and other various products to avoid this unwanted reaction in your body.

 

  1. GMOs

With virtually no testing done with FDA approval, GMO’s, or genetically modified organisms, have already made their way into many foods. These types of foods have been genetically modified to withstand pesticides and are engineered to repel bugs.  While all of this sounds great it is a dangerous gamble that has been seen to cause tumors within lab rats. Plus, GMO’s don’t require disclosure on their food labels, so there is no way to know what you are getting or what might happen as a result of consumption.

Avoid GMO’s by choosing foods that are certified as organic, this is at the present time the only way to avoid this risk.
